About Us

Julie Hoffman, Calligrapher

When did you realize that you had a talent for calligraphy?

Well, my second grade teacher, Mrs. Goodman, fascinated me.  She wrote all the students’ names in calligraphy and graded papers with fancy markers.  I just thought that she had the best penmanship in the world.  Little did I know at the time that is was calligraphy.  In the fourth grade my parents gave me a beginner’s calligraphy set for my birthday.  So I asked Mrs. Goodman if she would teach me how to write.  Luckily for me, she was very patient. She taught me during recess for an entire year.   I started my craft doing graduation certificates for my grade school’s Kindergarten and 5th grade.  I was also asked to pen the awards for the Science Fair.  I kept the school “business” going well into college where I used my calligraphy skills to help fund a lot of pizza, books, friends and fun.  It was in college where I transitioned into the weddings arena.

Where can calligraphy add a special touch?

Anywhere and everywhere.  The possibilities are endless.  Not only does it allow for an elegant invitation to go out to all the guests, but it also takes a lot of stress off the bride.  I become the person who makes sure that all the addresses are correct and that the invitations get out on time and look beautiful.

And invitations aren’t the only place where calligraphy can make the bride’s special day more special.  Leading up to the wedding and days after, calligraphy keeps the elegance of the wedding going.  Also, the bride and groom will have little art pieces to keep as wonderful, warm memories.  Memories to share with their children and their children’s children.  Things like:

  • Place Cards
  • Table Tents
  • Dinner Menus
  • Thank You Notes
  • Wedding Vows
  • Poems and Readings
  • Wedding Programs
  • Gift Tags and Favors

And I love doing custom designs for people to really put a part of their personality into every detail.

If a bride wants to have her invitations addressed in calligraphy, what tip would you give her?

The most important tip is to meet with your calligrapher before you select and order your invitations.  The stock you choose, envelopes and color can all affect the look and beauty of calligraphy.

Lastly, why the name J.P. Scribbles?

Ever since Mrs. Goodman introduced me to the beauty of calligraphy, it has been a part of my life.  I named my business prior to getting married myself, using my initials.  I added the “scribbles” to show my personality.
